Liquid Link Labs

Instead of only buying companies, build them.

Labs is the venture studio inside Liquid Link. It is the area intended to begin first, and nothing in it has begun.

What a venture studio is

A venture studio builds businesses in-house instead of investing in businesses other people have already built. The studio supplies the idea, the early work and the operating attention, and it keeps building until the thing either works or is stopped.

That is a different discipline from investing. An investor's leverage is selection; a studio's leverage is execution, and the constraint is attention rather than deal flow. Labs is written as a studio because Build Capital's stated intention for this area is to build rather than only to buy.

The formulation

Our own venture studio. Instead of merely buying companies: build them.

What sits in scope

The scope is deliberately close to what a small team can actually build: software, media and internal tooling, rather than anything requiring a factory or a licence to operate. A business that comes out of Labs could stay owned, be sold, or take outside investment later, and which of those happens is decided per business rather than by policy.

Scope

  • AI products
  • Software prototypes and internal tools
  • Media concepts and automated channels
  • Digital services
  • Internal incubation

What building first changes

Building before buying changes what the rest of the platform learns. A studio that has shipped something small knows, in a way no memo produces, what an early digital business actually costs in attention, where it breaks, and which of a founder's claims turn out to be load-bearing. That is the argument for putting Labs first, ahead of areas that look more substantial on paper.

It also sets the standard for how the rest of this section is written. Labs is the area closest to being real, and it still has nothing to report. Saying that plainly here is what makes the same statement credible on the pages where it would be easier to fudge.

Why first

The cheapest way to learn what an early digital business costs is to build one, at the smallest scale that still teaches something.

Why Labs is intended to come first, and why it has not started

Labs is the area that can begin at the smallest scale: building something in-house needs neither outside capital nor an investment vehicle to exist first. That is why Build Capital intends to start here rather than somewhere more structurally demanding.

It has not started. There is no entity, no contractor engaged, no experiment running and no capital committed. Before anything does start, the scope of what Labs will and will not do is to be written down narrowly and taken to counsel, because a studio that defines itself loosely at the beginning is the one that discovers the definition mattered later.

LABS PROJECTS - NONE STARTED; WAITS ON A WRITTEN SCOPE, ON COUNSEL AND ON A FIRST PROJECT BRIEF

The neighbouring areas: Ventures covers companies that are bought rather than built, Media covers digital media assets, and Liquid Link sets out how the five areas fit together.
